Safety

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the GranCabrio. But it costs extra on the 4 Series Convertible.

Both the GranCabrio and the 4 Series Convertible have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Engine

The GranCabrio has more powerful engines than the 4 Series Convertible:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the GranCabrio running on electricity gets better mileage than the 4 Series Convertible:

The GranCabrio Foglore can travel with zero emissions for 229 miles. The 4 Series Convertible can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the GranCabrio (except Foglore)’s fuel efficiency. The 4 Series Convertible doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The GranCabrio has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the 4 Series Convertible (18.5 vs. 15.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the GranCabrio’s brake rotors are larger than those on the 4 Series Convertible:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the GranCabrio has larger tires than the 4 Series Convertible (F:265/30R20 & R:295/30R21 vs. 225/45R18). The GranCabrio’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 4 Series Convertible (F:265/30R20 & R:295/30R21 vs. F:225/40R19 & R:255/35R19).

The GranCabrio’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 4 Series Convertible’s standard 45 series tires. The GranCabrio’s tires are lower profile than the 4 Series Convertible’s optional 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GranCabrio has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the 4 Series Convertible. The 4 Series Convertible’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the GranCabrio uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the 4 Series Convertible, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The GranCabrio has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The GranCabrio’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The 4 Series Convertible doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GranCabrio’s wheelbase is 3.1 inches longer than on the 4 Series Convertible (115.3 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the GranCabrio is 2.5 inches wider in the front and 2.6 inches wider in the rear than the track on the 4 Series Convertible.

Chassis

The front grille of the GranCabrio uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The 4 Series Convertible doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The GranCabrio has 5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 4 Series Convertible (89 vs. 84).

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the 4 Series Convertible, the GranCabrio has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GranCabrio’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The 4 Series Convertible does not have an oil pressure gauge.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the GranCabrio to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The 4 Series Convertible doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GranCabrio has standard extendable sun visors. The 4 Series Convertible doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The GranCabrio has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The 4 Series Convertible doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.
