Safety

The McLaren Artura has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The MCPura doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Artura’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The MCPura doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

Both the Artura and the MCPura have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The Artura comes with a full 5-year/45000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The MCPura’s 4-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

The Artura’s corrosion warranty is 6 years and unlimited miles longer than the MCPura’s (10/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

McLaren pays for scheduled maintenance on the Artura for 3 years and 27000 miles. McLaren will pay for oil changes, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance (up to 3 visits). Maserati doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the MCPura.

Engine

The Artura’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid produces 70 more horsepower (691 vs. 621) than the MCPura’s standard 3.0 turbo V6. The Artura’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid produces 60 more horsepower (691 vs. 631) than the MCPura GT2 Stradale’s standard 3.0 turbo V6.

As tested in Car and Driver the McLaren Artura is faster than the Maserati MCPura 3.0:

Fuel Economy and Range

The Artura can travel with zero emissions for 11 miles. The MCPura can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the Artura’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The MCPura doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Artura’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The MCPura doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Artura has 1.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the MCPura (17.1 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the McLaren Artura higher (5 out of 10) than the Maserati MCPura (4). This means the Artura produces up to 5.2 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the MCPura every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Artura’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the MCPura:

Suspension and Handling

The Artura has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The MCPura doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Artura’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (41.9% to 58.1%) than the MCPura’s (40% to 60%). This gives the Artura more stable handling and braking.

Chassis

The Artura is shorter than the MCPura, making the Artura easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces:

Ergonomics

The Artura’s standard power window controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The MCPura’s available power window controls are spread out on the center console where they can’t be seen without the driver completely removing his eyes from the road.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the Artura offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The MCPura doesn’t offer cornering lights.

When the Artura with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The MCPura’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.
